Rose Manuscript, Archives, & Rare Book Library copy bears partially illegible signature on the front pastedown. Additional three sketches of eyes laid in before plate 2. Dedication on plate 1 to Ferdinand Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, used as title. Title leaf engraving signed: Oliverius Gattus sculpsit 1619. Line engravings, plate mark 17 x 24 cm and smaller. Printed from the original copper plates engraved in 1619 by Oliviero Gatti; with inscription "questo e il Vero Originale" and imprint of Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627-1691) added to the dedication leaf (Plate I). The plates for this series are mentioned in an inventory of the de Rossi family printshop taken in 1648 at which time the inheritance was divided among the four sons of founder Giuseppe il Vecchio de Rossi who had died in 1639. Artist's copy book featuring a series of anatomical and figural studies demonstrating how to draw eyes, ears, mouths, hands, arms, feet, the torso, and heads of different ages and types. Binding: Bound in limp vellum, soiled and marked front and back. Bound on leather cords with hand-sewn end bands and top and tail cords sewn through cover. Foxing on endsheets.
