First edition. This 'Libro primo' was the only one published of this ed.; the second ed. of 1604 added a second book.
With 2 t.p., both engraved, the first consisting completely of text and dated 1590, the second illustrated and dated 1589. Colophon is dated 1590.
The engraved and letterpress leaves are numbered in a single sequence, with the addition of engraved leaves 66 secondo, 75 secondo and 76 primo. Leaf 65 is a double-page engraving, mounted on a stub at the centerfold, and 75 secondo is a folded double-page engraving. Leaves 97 & 98 form a double-page plate, mounted on a stub at the centerfold. The leaf following leaf 6 is blank (conjugate with main title leaf). Second leaf is added engraved t.p. with port. of Fontana, his arms at foot and those of Sixtus V at head. Ornaments and initials in various styles. At foot of T3 is a blind impression of the headline for the left-hand pages, as noted by Mortimer in all 3 Harvard copies.
