    Summary
Frontispiece portrait of Phillis Wheatley signed: Pendleton [i.e. William S. Pendleton], Boston; Boston. Light & Horton. "Of this last [1838] ed. about 200 copies, completed by reprinting a few missing pages, were placed on sale in 1864."--Allibone. Charles F. Heartman, in his "Phillis Wheatley (Phillis Peters) a critical attempt and a bibliography of her writings," (1915), p. 42, cites the Allibone note but states that no copy could be located. In the copy in hand, gathering 3 (p. 25-[36]) has been reset in a different typeface and printed on a different paper stock. (In the reset gathering, p. [36] contains a note found on p. 34-35 of the gathering as originally set.) The evidence of this gathering and the binding suggest that this is one of the copies completed and placed on sale in 1864. "Memoir."--p. [11]-35. Written by Margaretta Matilda Odell. "Poems by a slave."--p. [117]-155. Written by George M. Horton. Electronic reproduction. digitized. The online edition of this book in the public domain, i.e., not protected by copyright, has been produced by the Emory University Digital Library Publications Program.

    Summary
The online edition of this book in the public domain, i.e., not protected by copyright, has been produced by the Emory University Libraries. Thirty-six emblematic engravings, the first signed by Michael Wening after C.A. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces, initials. Signatures: pi1 )(² a⁴(-a1) b-x⁴ y⁸(y8 blank). First edition of a baroque emblem book commemorating the death of the Elector of Bavaria, Ferdinand Maria (1636-1679) called "the peace-loving" ("der Friedliebende"), which is dedicated to his successor Maximilian II Emanuel. The fine large engravings of emblems were etched by the Elector's court engraver, Michael Wenig (1645-1718), after designs by the eminent painter and architect, Cosmas Damian Asam (1686-1742), who was responsible (along with his sons) with a good deal of the baroque artwork supplied to churches in Bavaria and Switzerland. The subjects depicted run a wide range of subjects including; animals (eagles, lions, elephants, etc.), landscape (mountains, gardens, etc.), weather (sun, stars, lightning, etc.) and man made symbols (pyramids, gems, etc.); each with a Latin motto across the top and within very elaborate baroque frames. Praz notes a rare variant issue, unknown to Landwehr, which has a portrait and folding plate (not present here). Pitts Theology Library copy formerly owned by, Ferdinand Maria Franz Freiherr von Neuhaus (1655-1716) Grand Chamberlain of Elector Maximilian II and the lawyer, legal writer and criminal law reformer Karl Ferdinand Hommel (1722-1781). Citation/References Note: Landwehr, J. German emblem books, 620. Praz, M. Studies in seventeenth-century imagery (2nd ed.), p. 527.

    Summary
"Third edition"--Preface, p. 8. Earlier eds. published with tile: Sketches of my life in the South. Jacob Stroyer was born a slave on the Singleton plantation near Columbia, South Carolina in 1849 and lived there until the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1864. During the Civil War, he was sent to Sullivan's Island and Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, where he waited on Confederate officers. While there, Stroyer learned to read. Following his release from slavery, Jacob Stroyer settled in Salem, Massachusetts, and became minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church there. This new and enlarged edition of Stroyer's narrative, My Life in the South, expands upon earlier editions, and was written with the hope of generating enough income to complete his education. The narrative covers his fifteen years in slavery providing information about his family, his life at his master's summer seat as well as the physical abuse he endured at the hands of the Singleton plantation's overseer. Stroyer also discusses the emotional strain that the slave trade put on his and other slave families and provides a series of brief anecdotes about slave life, culture, beliefs, and interactions with masters and slaves.
