The work is dedicated to Leopold Archduke of Austria with a full-page dedicatory illustration and 162 numbered etched text emblems. The the delicately etched emblems include many examples of everyday life in the Low Countries with illustrations of people at play and work including trades, children playing, games, as well as scenes from mythology, history and fantasy; each often expressing a either a weakness or strength of moral character with moderation a frequent topic or making fun of a certain segment of society (e.g. on astronomers who see spots on the sun). An English translation was published in 1999 along with the original text.
