\Summary: First edition of this beautifully illustrated work on an updated "Ship of Fools" theme illustrated with 66 fine etchings by Johann Christoph Weigel ( 1661-1722) who was a noted German engraver, art dealer and Nuremberg publisher. The beautiful plates depict fools from a wide variety of everyday life as well as on special themes including book collecting, fencing, gallantry, guns, luck, gardening, fools for dogs, cats and horses, fashion, law, porcelain and glasses, drinking, alchemists, games, dance, clocks, women, musicians and newspaper fools. The work has Americana interest as well with fine etchings of snuff fools, tobacco smoking fools and unbeliever fools (including an American Indian). The final unnumbered engraving is a mirror for the reader himself "Gar kein Narr": "I'm not a fool"): 65 of the plates were reused in 1709 in a work erroneous attributed Abraham a Sancta Clara titled "Centifolium stultorum."
