Third edition of Alciatus in France, “with new woodcuts superior to those of the ‘Augsburg’ editions” (Landwehr). The emblems are attributed to Mercure Jollat. “It is the Paris edition which set the standard for the popular field of emblem literature (Mortimer, French, no. 13, p. 13). Alciatus was not happy with the two earlier Augsburg editions; but the expanded Wechel edition which appeared in Paris in 1534 with entirely new woodcuts by Jollat set a new standard. The work was so popular that an edition appeared in 1535, as well as two Latin-French bilingual editions in 1536 (apart from the present Latin edition of that same year). Wechel's Pegasus device appears on t.p. and last p. Woodcut ill. by Mercure Jollat; that on p. 82 is signed with his Mercury device. The cut on p. 97 is printed sideways. Initial. Pitts Theology Library copy bound in dark brown morocco with gilt edges and marbled endpaper.
